Sydney Racing Tips Australian Derby background

The Sydney Racing tips Australian Derby is a very “hot” start and barriers are important as there is only a 200m run to the first turn and those drawn wide risk doing extra work in the run. Its worth noting that overall the Rosehill Guineas winner has a horrendous record in the Australian Derby and also favourites do not fare as well, not having a great record.

Australian Derby a colourful background
The Australian Derby is a blue ribbon event but has had its share of “colourful” races over the years ranging from 1961 with the famous “leg pull” incident when Mel Schumacher grabbed the leg of fellow jockey Tommy Hill to slow down his horse. As it would turn out it was the first day of “head on stewards patrol vision” and whilst they had heard about the tricks jockeys got up to they had never any evidence…until now Mel Schumacher was banned for life on the back of the incident. It was reduced to 6 years but we never got to see one of Aussie jockeys top young guns fulfil his potential. Shane Dye was also accused of “team riding” in the 1987 edition of the Sydney Racing tips Australian Derby where he allegedly set the race up for the stablemate seemingly looking around for where the horse was to ensure he could let it up on the rail and get the run. A race that has a colourful past!!
All that being said it is a race that many of the stars of the Australian Racing have competed in and won this event and class generally prevails in this 2400m classic.
Any three-year-olds contesting the Derby will come via major 3yo races like the the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas and Group 2 Tulloch Stakes held during the Rosehill carnival the previous couple of weeks. In recent times Criterion (2014) & It’s A Dundeel (2013) have taken out the Rosehill Guineas & ATC Australian Derby double.
