The Thursday 9th November 2019, after the Melbourne Cup (two days after the Cup) sees the Group 1 $1 million Oaks Day run at Flemington racecourse. The Oaks is for 3 year old fillies and is raced over 2,500 metres.

It is a set weights race to find the best filly in the country and is the most prestigious fillies race in Australasia. The Oaks was first run in 1861 and has had Group 1 status since 1979.

Victoria Oaks 2019 – A massive day Racing during Melbourne Cup Week Carnival

In recent years, Oaks Day has seen massive crowds to rival that of the other two big race meetings during the Melbourne Cup Week Carnival of Derby Day and Melbourne Cup. Much like the Victoria Derby, Oaks Day often provides a staying star of the future.

The 2015 winner Jameka, has gone on to be a super mare with wins in the Caulfield Cup 2016 during the 2016 Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival and the BMW in the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival 2019.

Oaks Day or Ladies Day at Flemington Racecourse

The other interesting fact of Oaks Day is its capacity to gain massive crowds despite being on a workday and the third race meeting in six days as part of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

It regularly has crowds in excess of 70,000 and whilst it is commonly known as Ladies Day has in recent times been more known as “Blokes Day”!
