The Melbourne Cup is Australia’s most famous horse race. Held on the first Tuesday of every November, it is run over the gruelling 3200 metres. The increase in prize money is consistent with the increases for the major Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival races like the Caulfield Cup and the WS Cox Plate in managing the challenge of the increases being bandied about in Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.
In fact the three largest races of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup and WS Cox Plate has had a collective 40% increase in prize money to $17 million between them.
How is the Melbourne Cup 2018 money divided up? First place receives $4,000,000 and trophies valued at $200,000, second $1,000,000, third $500,000, fourth $250,000, fifth $175,000 with the sixth to twelfth placed horses receiving $150,000 each.
The 2017 Melbourne Cup was won by Rekindling in a superb victory fidden by Corey Brown and trained by Joseph OBrien from the unlucky runner up Johannes Vermeer with Max Dynamite third.
