The Melbourne Cup is Australia’s most famous horse race. Held on the first Tuesday of every November, it is run over the gruelling 3200 metres. In 2018, the Melbourne Cup will be held on Tuesday 5th November at the usual Melbourne Cup time 3pm AEDT and will be the 159th running of the Melbourne Cup. Melbourne Cup 2019 – prize money $8 million
The 2019 Melbourne Cup will be run for a record prize money amount of $8 million, up from $7.3 million in 2018. The increase in prize money is consistent with the increases for the major Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival races like the Caulfield Cup and the WS Cox Plate. This is also managing the challenge of the increases in the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.
In fact the three largest races of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup and WS Cox Plate with collective prize money of $18 million between them.
