Sydney Spring Racing Carnival 2018
Sydney Spring Racing Carnival August-October 2018
The Sydney Spring Racing Carnival plays second fiddle to Australia’s largest Racing Carnival in Melbourne. At least it did until Racing NSW and the Australian Turf Club established the worlds richest race, the $13 million 1200m The Everest. And not only did they establish The Everest but they placed the meeting on Saturday 13 October, the big Caulfield Guineas meeting at Caulfield racecourse. Sydney Racing Tips over the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival will come from Randwick and Rosehill racecourses as the preferred racecourses for Group Racing over the Carnival.
Whilst the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival does not have the same pulling power for trainers and jockeys as its southern counterparts, it does play a major role in establishing a pathway for those who do choose to go south with some major races and prize money. The Sydney Spring Racing Carnival kicks off in earnest at the start of September with the WFA Chelmsford Stakes over 1600m.
The Sydney Spring Racing Carnival then heads to a series of meetings in September including the Theo Marks Stakes over 1300m, George Main Stakes over 1600m, the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose for 3 year olds.
Saturday 29 September the classic race Group 1 Epsom Handicap over 1600m and worth $1 million in prize money. The Epsom Handicap will attract a brilliant and is unprecedented as a middle distance race in Australia during the Spring.
The first weekend in October moves to the 3 year old classic the Group 1 $500,000 Spring Champion Stakes over 2000m for three year olds and a fabulous lead in race for the Victoria Derby.
Then it’s the big one…the 1200m The Everest, a field of only 12 competitors and worth a world record $13 million in prize money. The Everest is now the jewel in the crown for the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival and holds substantial media and publicity.
