The Sydney Spring Racing Carnival takes place in August to October each year with meetings held at the Royal Randwick, Rosehill, Warwick Farm & Canterbury racecourses in Sydney.

Whilst Sydney plays “second fiddle” in the Spring to the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, in the month of September, the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival has a massive month of Group races. This Carnival gives Sydney based owners and trainers to run their horses in lead up races in Sydney rather then have to take them to early to Melbourne for the big Cups Carnival. As such, Sydney then holds the key to form very early in some horses preparation in Sydney for the forthcoming Cups Carnival.

It all commences on the first Saturday of September with the Chelmsford Stakes Day meeting at Royal Randwick Racecourse and the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes, a WFA weight for age race over 1600 metres. There is also two other Group 2 and two Group three races on this day.

The Sydney Spring Racing Carnival then moves onto the 10th September and the Group 1 Golden Rose, a $1 million prizemoney race over 1400 metres for the 3 year olds at Rosehill. The Group 2 Theo Mark Stakes and the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes are also on this day.

The Sydney Spring Racing Carnival then moves back to Randwick and the prestigious $1 million George Main Stakes over 1600 metres, a weight for age event carrying $500,000 in prize money. There are also three other Group 2 races on this day as well as the following Saturday with four Group 2 races.

AFL Grand Final Day is Saturday 1st October but for the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival it is Super Saturday. Three massive Group 1 races are held with total prizemoney of $2.25 million at Royal Randwick Racecourse.

First it’s the Group 1 Epsom Handicap, a 1600 metre middle distance race worth $1 million. This is the feature race of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival and has been previously won in 2015 by the brilliant mare Winx, who then headed straight to Melbourne for the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival to win the Cox Plate. The brilliant miler Super Impose was a two time winner of this great race.

The Metropolitan is the premier staying event of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival. A 2400 metre staying race worth $750,000, this race has been won by a group of very handy staying types. The other Group 1 race is for the fillies, the Group 1 1600 metre Flight Stakes worth $500,000 caps off a massive days Racing at Randwick.

The last race of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival is the Spring Champion Stakes, a cracking staying race for the 3 year olds held at Royal Randwick Racecourse and worth $500,000. A who’s who list of horses has won this race including the Champion horse Kingston Town as the most famous of them.

So that’s it for the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival and a wonderful appetizer to what is about to arrive for the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival 2016.
