First On The List Of The Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival 2017 – Flemington!
The Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival 2017 really kicks into action on the first weekend of October at Flemington racecourse, just after the AFL Grand Final and officially ends at Sandown in the middle of November. In between this there are meetings at Caulfield including the Group 1 Caulfield Cup and Moonee Valley with the richest WFA weight for age race in the world the Group 1 WS Cox Plate.
The Carnival does see all four Melbourne metropolitan racetracks hold meetings at various stages of the Carnival including :
Flemington racecourse is the home of Melbourne Racing and as such, features the majority of the key races during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
The G1 Makybe Diva Stakes gets us started on spring action on 14 September and give us a taste of what is to come. The G1 Turnball Stakes in early October kicks up a pace, then its straight to Melbourne Cup week with:
Derby Day on Saturday November 4
Melbourne Cup Day Tuesday 7 November
Oaks Day on Thursday 9 November
Emirates Day on 11 November.
Caulfield racecourse hosts some great Racing over the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. This is started in mid-late September with the Naturalism Stakes on Saturday 16 September.
It then hosts the G1 Underwood Stakes and the G1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes on Saturday 23 September. We then return to Caulfield racecourse on Saturday 14 October for the big 3 year old races :

Moonee Valley racecourse
Moonee Valley racecourse hosts the weight for age classic, the $3 million G1 WS Cox Plate held on Saturday 28 October over the 2040m, a week after the Caulfield Cup and 10 days prior the Melbourne Cup.
The WS Cox Plate is judged by many racing purists to be the most genuine classic of the Australian racing calendar given its weight for age status and smaller field compared to the Cups races and brings together the best weight for age horses from around the country and overseas.
There are also Friday night meetings over the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival at “The Valley” including:
Group 1 AJ Moir Stakes on Friday night 29 September preceding the AFL Grand Final
Group 1 Manikato Stakes on Friday 27 October the night before the WS Cox Plate.
Group 1 $3 million WS Cox Plate held on Saturday 28 October over the 2040m
The last official meeting of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival is at Sandown Racecourse and for Sandown Classic Day to be held on Saturday 18 November.
Many trainers who have been able to enjoy success over the other meetings over the Carnival or who’s horses have pulled up fresh choose to run them at Sandown. It includes a number of Group 2 races including:

There is also a number of provincial race meetings that hold their Cups days during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival and trainers often use these meetings as lead up races or as a means to get qualification into the Melbourne Cup. Of these meetings, the Geelong Cup held on Wednesday 25 October and raced over 2400m is the most sought after race.
