AFL tips and betting Round 23 – The Winners

The winners Round 23…West Coast, Geelong, Essendon, Richmond, North, Collingwood
West Coast and Essendon were the undoubted winners of Round 23 to make their way into AFL finals 2017. West Coast made their way into eight spot with its win over Adelaide and Melbourne’s stunning loss to Collingwood. Essendon kept its spot in the eight and moved to seventh with its win, albeit close win, over Fremantle.

Geelong climbed to second spot from third with its win over GWS and in doing so Geelong gets the home final. The only problem with this is in losing to Geelong, GWS slip from second to fourth, Richmond from fourth to third and now Geelong plays its “home” final at the MCG. Yes you guessed it, Richmond’s home ground.

Richmond beating St Kilda and finishing third instead of fourth saved them from a final in Adelaide and they get the “away/home” final at the G. This gives us Adelaide, Geelong, Richmond and GWS in the top four to chase for the AFL Grand Final 2017 betting places.

North got themselves off the bottom of the table with its win over Brisbane and we get the +12.5 three unit Best Bet.

And it would be remiss of us not to mention Collingwood. The word “brave” has been thrown around in Collingwood’s decision to give Coach Nathan Buckley a two year extension. Sure the appointment is out of an exhaustive review. However we just wonder how close Eddie is to Bucks. They are so joint at the hip that Bucks is going nowhere as Eddie is all so powerful at Collingwood. In their defense Collingwood won four of its last seven and if there was no one else around then I guess “better the devil you know”. Time will tell but when you have gone fourth, sixth and then four years outside the eight, well better coaches than Buckley have had their marching orders.

And the losers in AFL Round 23…Melbourne, Melbourne, Melbourne and GWS, St Kilda, Gold Coast and Brisbane

Melbourne was a dismal failure in the end result and the finals action escapes the Demons for another year, eleven in total. It really is just a shocking result of inconsistency for a team that showed so much potential and talent. So they can now look onto 2018.

GWS slipped from second to fourth with its loss to Geelong. They have talent aplenty and there is some chance they apply this talent to its full extent in the finals. However, they really have not shown full consistency since the mid season bye and the question has to be applied how far can they go.

St Kilda were smashed by Richmond and showed that they simply were not finals material in 2017 despite the improvement.

AFL Queensland is in big trouble. Since the 2001,02,03 Lions premiership it has all looked a little sick up North. To occupy the bottom two spots just makes a mockery of the AFL expansion programme. Gold Coast has been in the AFL and is yet to make the finals. It is hard to see short term improvement and looking long term maybe crystal balling a long way and tens millions of dollars down the drain in the process.
