AFL Finals 2017 tips and betting – Scenarios

We have considered a few scenarios here:

  1. What is likely to happen historically
  2. The left fielder
  3. The “bye” doomsday scenario
  4. What is likely to happen Adelaide v Geelong
AFL finals tips and betting up until last year and the introduction of the Round 24 bye, was predicated on history repeating itself. History will tell you the top four will end up reaching the Preliminary and therefore two of the top four team to play off in the AFL Grand Final. Typically this will be the winning sides from the first weekend of the finals, who benefit from the weeks bye. Of course, this is pre the era of the “forced AFL” weekend bye of Round 24 for all finals teams. However we are of the view that sides will be much better prepared than last year for this scenario.Adelaide is in the box seat. They play a home final and we have them accounting for GWS and then going into a Prelim to play Richmond or Geelong, again at home. We find it difficult to separate Geelong and Richmond as Geelong gets the “home” final at Richmond’s “home” ground. However we have Geelong winning. In this scenario we have both GWS and Richmond, losing the first week of finals, winning in the second week and then crossing the draw to face the other Qualifying Final team. This would be Adelaide v Richmond and Geelong v GWS (probably at Skilled Stadium). Adelaide and Geelong are well placed here and this scenario returns the AFL Grand Final to the “norm” of teams ranked one and two at the end of the home and away. The Adelaide/Geelong quinella is $5.

The Left Fielder – GWS v Sydney
This is the left field scenario of an all Sydney AFL Grand Final being played in Melbourne at the MCG. How does it happen?
It requires GWS to lose to Adelaide this Thursday in Adelaide then to win the following week in its knock out final at home against either Port or West Coast. This is highly likely. GWS then crosses to the other side of the draw. Sydney would need to beat Essendon in the first weekend of finals. Sydney then plays the loser of Geelong and Richmond at the MCG. Whilst a tough game, they have beaten both of these teams in their time at the G and are well versed with the ground. They then cross to the other side of the draw.

So we have GWS and Sydney missing each other on Prelim final day. Sydney goes to Adelaide to play the Crows who they beat at Adelaide Oval only two weeks ago so this holds no fears. GWS then plays either Geelong or Richmond at either Skilled or the MCG. The young talented Giants may have their work cut out in either scenario but do have the experience of last years Prelim loss to the Bulldogs for history to call on. The Sydney/GWS quinella is $17.

    3. The “bye” doomsday scenario
This scenario is established on the new created bye for all finals team for Round 24 of the AFL, the week before the first round of finals. Last year the Western Bulldogs won the 2016 AFL Grand Final after finishing seventh, albeit they had a 15-7 season. This would as a rule have you finishing fourth or higher.

In 2016, Sydney, after finishing the home and away season top, lost in the first week of the finals. This followed the Round 24 bye. Then in the Prelim final, the two sides that won Qualifying finals to go straight through to the Prelim, GWS and Geelong, lost to not make the Grand Final. This is the first time ever that a team that won straight through to the Prelim did not make the GF.

So, we are looking for a value scenario based on last year and we have settled on GWS and Richmond. This would be Richmond losing to Geelong and GWS to Adelaide this weekend. Then the following weekend, GWS and Richmond account for the winners of the two knock out finals, likely to be Port and Sydney.
GWS and Richmond then swap sides of the draw and we would have Geelong v GWS and Adelaide v Richmond. Remember, the bye doomsay scenario in this circumstance has Geelong and Adelaide playing once in nearly four weeks.
    Richmond/GWS quinella is $13.

Our early look at AFL first week finals tips and analysis was sent last Thursday and we will provide an update this Wednesday, noting games are as follows:
Adelaide v GWS – Thursday
Geelong v Richmond – Friday
Sydney v Essendon and Port v West Coast – Saturday
